Hardtimes killin’ Floor Blues
Director: Henri-Jean Debon
A raw and unsweetened snapshot of the personal free fall of Gun Club lead singer Jeffrey Lee Pierce.
In 1992, Henri-Jean Debon was a fly on the wall observing his great idol Jeffrey Lee Pierce. The lead singer of the now-defunct punk band Gun Club lived a relatively obscure life in London in economic ruin and with a liver that was in a state of advanced disintegration. He died four years later of a brain haemorrhage, and moved by his death, Debon lay aside his recordings. But now the material has luckily been unearthed again, and the rattling recordings are just as obtrusive as their intensity is moving. ‘Hardtimes Killin’ Floor Blues’ is spared the pompousness of obituary speeches. A raw and unsweetened snapshot of a human free fall and a portrait of an exceptional artist, who inadvertently ended up being a caricature of what he always dreamt of being: a real blues man.
